Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I service my HVAC system?

Just like your car, your home’s heating and cooling system requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity, energy efficiency, and reliability. We recommend your HVAC system be serviced a minimum of twice a year to help prevent unexpected breakdowns.

FAQ image

What is the warranty like on a new HVAC system?

McCubbin Mechanical offers a 10-year parts warranty on the equipment we install. Some outdoor condensing units include a 5-year unit replacement, rather than replacing a faulty compressor the entire unit is replaced. Every new install includes a 1 year labor warranty. Extended labor warranties are available upon customer request.

FAQ image

Which HVAC system is right for my home?

Every home is unique. When it comes to choosing the perfect system for your home it only makes sense to have an experienced professional analyze the structure. Personal preference also comes into account when choosing a system. We never leave you to make these decisions alone. We will always educate you on various options and the pros and cons of each.

FAQ image

How do I know if I need a new heater or air conditioner?

The life of a well-maintained HVAC system is 15-20 years. Furnaces or air conditioners that are improperly sized for a structure will have a significantly shorter life. A gas fired furnace should be replaced before it becomes unsafe to operate. Any potential for combustion gases to mix with the air stream in the supply ducts will require immediate replacement. This is to protect the occupants from potential carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you notice changes in your system’s ability to heat or cool over time this may be a sign to get a professional opinion. The best indicator for a homeowner is the age of the system. We always recommend replacing a system before a major failure to prevent being left without heat or cooling for extended periods of time, or in extreme weather conditions when it is needed most. Our technicians are trained to spot the signs of component degradation.

FAQ image

How often should I clean my air filter?

We always recommend that you do NOT use cleanable filters. We encourage all our clients to use only disposable filters in order to avoid air flow issues and unnecessary strain on blower motors, heat exchangers, and outdoor condensing units. Using clean disposable filters will increase the lifespan and efficiency of your equipment.

FAQ image

How often should I replace my air filter?

It is recommended to check a standard 1” filter for buildup every 30 days and should be replaced every 30-45 days. If you have an upgraded filter compartment with a 4” filter it is recommended to check your filter for buildup every 60 days. Replacement of a 4” filter should be every 90-120 days depending upon the condition of the filter.

FAQ image

What is the proper indoor humidity level?

Humidity level has major implications on the overall comfort and health of homeowners or renters, as well as structures within the home. Winter relative humidity can get as low as 10% in Utah. Some individuals may experience dry skin, chapped lips, dry sinus cavities which may contribute to secondary symptoms in the face, ears, nose, or throat, as well as other breathing related issues. The dry air is also known for damaging expensive woodwork. Cabinets, hard wood floors, railings and banisters will shrink and expand with abrupt changes in humidity resulting in gaps and cracks. We suggest keeping a consistent relative humidity level between 30-50%.

FAQ image

How do I know if I need a humidifier?

Consistent high occurrences of static electricity are a good indicator to consider adding a steam or bypass humidifier to your home. If you are experiencing physical symptoms consistent with low humidity levels, we encourage you to consult a medical professorial to find out if supplementary humidification in your home may alleviate your symptoms.

FAQ image

Should I have my air ducts cleaned?

Duct cleaning comes down to personal preference, as well as the current state of your ducts and air filtration system. Most buildup takes place in your cold air return ducts. Your filter marks the point of separation between the return air being pulled into your system, and the supply air blowing out your vents. With this in mind, we suggest investing in filtration before duct cleaning.

FAQ image

What size HVAC system do I need?

The size of the system you need is determined by many factors which include:

- Volume of conditioned living space

- Number of windows, size, type, and cardinal direction

- Insulation levels

- How many individuals occupy the residence

- Heat loads from other sources such as water heaters and kitchen appliances

- Average high and low outdoor temperature during the year

For every system estimate, we will visit your home and enter all relevant data into specialized software in order to determine the perfect size system for your home. If requested, a report detailing the individualized system sizing requirements may be provided to clients for your education.
